Hacker targets internet bankers
A hacker targeting Absa clients has managed to steal hundreds of thousands of
rands by breaching their accounts over the internet, the Sunday Times reports.
The Police Commercial Crimes Unit confirmed it was investigating nine cases
involving thefts from Absa accounts. Police and bank officials say it appears
the perpetrator used spyware to gain access to the personal computers of the
victims, and, having found out their internet banking information, transferred
money out of their accounts. Absa refused to refer to the culprit as a `hacker`
and would only refer to the crime as `identity fraud` committed by a person who
had gained access to clients` accounts through their own personal computers
using the internet. ABSA said the crook had gained access to personal
information of account holders through their own computers and said it had
nothing to do with the bank.
Details..
'Cyber hacker' not involved
News24 reports that Absa will repay money stolen via the internet from the
accounts of three clients, but only if an investigation by an auditor confirms
that the money did, in fact, disappear in this manner. Alfie Naidoo, head of
Absa's e-channels, said on Sunday that three people in the Cape allegedly
lost a total of R200 000. In one case, the auditors had found that the
claim was legitimate and had undertaken to refund the money.

[IN IRAQ AFTER THE WAR]
The Pentagon announced last week that several thousand troops in Iraq will not
be able to leave Iraq. Tired troops are looking at longer deployments as
attacks continue daily in Iraq. Could U.S. troops be suffering from low
morale? Retired Air Force Maj. Gen. Don Shepperd joined anchor Soledad O?Brien
to discuss the issue. "When you're going out on patrols and you know you're
simply a target, and you don't have any end in sight, it's just one day after
the other. It's definitely going to get to your sense of humor and your
psyche. The switch from combat to the patrolling and peacekeeping is a very
difficult switch. In one, you're in control. And in the other, the enemy is in
control in guerrilla-style attacks. So it's just a very, very tough situation
for the soldiers involved."

What you'll be driving in a green tomorrow
An early glimpse of the 21st century automobile came not from Henry Ford or a formula one pit lane, but from the pen of Jules Verne. "The energy of tomorrow is water broken down into hydrogen and oxygen using electricity," he wrote in The Mysterious Island in 1874. "These elements will secure the earth's power supply for an indefinite period."

INTERVIEW WITH CHILD PSYCHOLOGIST DR. MICHAEL THOMPSON
Early Sunday in Oaklyn, New Jersey, Matthew Lovett, 18, was arrested with two
other teenagers on charges they plotted to kill three teens and open fire
randomly on other people. According to classmates, Lovett did not exhibit any
warning signs. But a closer look at the 18-year-old's past reveals he did not
exactly have an easy childhood. Child psychologist Dr. Michael Thompson is the
coauthor of "Raising Cain: Protecting the Emotional Lives of Boys," and he
joined anchor Soledad O'Brien on Tuesday morning to discuss the case. "The
kids who are rejected at school are very much at risk psychologically, and
they can sink into a depression, and because nobody is aware of it, and nobody
knows him, nobody asks, 'Are you sad? Are you hurting?' Hidden depression in
boys is a real problem."
